IN FOCUS - HARALD DE BARY

With a successive focus on the 1960s to 1990s, this exhibition series brings together artists from the gallery. It begins with works by Harald de Bary (1935-2019), which enter into a dialog with contemporaries Oskar Kolb and Arthur Fauser as well as with more recent positions such as those of the artist holgerherrmann. The presentations will continue in loose succession. Johann Georg Geyger, Florian Köhler, Christa von Schnitzler and others will then be in the spotlight. HARALD DE BARY

Harald de Bary was born in Frankfurt in 1935. He comes into contact with the Quadriga Group at an early age. Heinz Kreutz introduces the young man to oil painting. After a semester of art history and philosophy at the University of Freiburg, he began studying abstract painting at the Stuttgart Academy in the class of Heinrich Wildermann. De Bary undertakes numerous trips to Turkey, Greece and various African countries. He spends several months in Studio 17 of the British artist Stanley W. Hayter. In Paris, he met the Surrealists and became friends with Raoul Ubac and Jacques Germain.

Masses of light

After his informal beginnings, he created abstract works in the 1960s that were covered with an all-over of rhythmically applied strokes. Relief-like spatula structures emerge, whereby the color white is not set in a constructive manner as by the ZERO artists working at the same time, but the informal-gestural still shines through. De Bary speaks of "masses of light".

The year after his exhibition in Frankfurt, the artist moved into an old schoolhouse in the northwest of Ireland, which was to become the center of his life and work. He died in Frankfurt am Main in 2019.
