Maria von Heider-Schweinitz

THE VISIBLE FORM OF HUMANITY

7 September-24 October 2024
Opening on Friday, 6 September 2024, 6 pm

To mark the start of the Frankfurt galleries' season, the gallery is showing the painter Maria von Heider-Schweinitz (1894 Darmstadt-1974 Frankfurt), who belongs to the second generation of Expressionists. She studied sculpture at the Städelschule under Richard Scheibe. In 1932, she turned to painting, encouraged by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, with whom she had a lifelong friendship. Her studio at the Städelschule was destroyed towards the end of the war and she lost 300 paintings. In 1949, Hanna Bekker vom Rath dedicated a solo exhibition to her at the Frankfurter Kunstkabinett. The artist's work was on display at the Museum Giersch as part of the exhibition ‘Künstlerin sein! Ottilie W. Roderstein. Emy Roeder. Maria von Heider-Schweinitz’. in 2013.
