In her paintings, Gabriele Aulehla (* 1963) combines crossed color gradients in arcs and waves. The former master student of Thomas Bayrle lays several translucent layers of paint on top of each other in a reduced color scheme, bright areas stand out like lights. As clear and precise as the proportions and colors are, the overall structure appears surprisingly animated. What is reminiscent of lights and shadows from a distance is revealed as the materiality of her painting when viewed up close.
For over two decades, the artist was known for her vertical color surfaces and gradients. About seven years ago, she began to intersect the color gradients, eventually also in the form of arcs and waves. Whereas previously the individual color values were her main focus, it is now the combination of a few colors in conjunction with movement that Gabriele Aulehla brings to the canvas in up to 100 layers. The inspiration for her paintings comes from concrete perceptions of nature, such as a chestnut tree in spring or the hue of a body of water, or from emotional experiences such as a particularly beautiful encounter or the death of someone close to her.
Even if she does not give her paintings titles so as not to restrict the freedom of viewing, the specific occasions can still be guessed at. What all her works have in common is a subtle irritation of vision that captivates the viewer in a peculiar way. This subjective pull is what makes her painting unique: in trying to fathom this effect by looking at it, one ends up in the heart of her painting. The modulation of the colors results in a spatial effect that leads from the completely abstract painting of the acrylic paint to representationally perceptible patterns. From close up, however, the brushstroke remains visible.
